Servicing

How often your tuk-tuk needs a service

A tuk-tuk working a full day covers more distance in a month than many private cars do in three. Servicing on time is the cheapest way to keep it on the road.

The short answer

Follow the service schedule in your owner's manual, counting by kilometres or months, whichever comes first. If you work long days, carry heavy loads or drive on rough or dusty roads, plan for the earlier end of the schedule. Keep every service receipt.

Distance or time, whichever comes first

The owner's manual lists service points by distance and by time. A vehicle that works every day will usually reach the distance first. One that is parked a lot still needs servicing by time, because oil and rubber parts age even when the engine is not running.

Write the odometer reading on each service receipt so you always know when the next one is due.

What a service covers

The exact list depends on the model and the service interval. A typical service at an MRL branch includes:

✓Engine oil and oil filter change
✓Air filter cleaned or replaced, which matters more on dusty roads
✓Brakes inspected and adjusted
✓Tyres, steering and suspension checked
✓Cables, lights and electrics tested
✓On the Baxy Lion, battery, charger and motor checks in place of oil work

Hard use means earlier servicing

Some kinds of work wear a vehicle faster than the standard schedule assumes. Ask your branch about a shorter interval if any of these apply to you.

Full-day shifts

Long hours with lots of stop-start driving in town traffic.

Heavy loads

Cargo bodies carrying close to their limit on most trips.

Dust and murram

Unpaved roads clog air filters and wear brakes faster.

Two drivers

A vehicle shared across day and night shifts rarely cools down.

Worth knowing. A missed service rarely causes a breakdown on its own. It lets small wear build up until several parts need replacing at once, which costs far more.

Where to get it done

Any MRL branch or Authorised Dealer can service your vehicle with genuine parts and stamp your service record. That record protects your warranty and helps when you sell.

Can I service my tuk-tuk at a local garage?

You can, but check how this affects your warranty first and ask for genuine parts. Your branch can tell you what is covered.

How long does a service take?
