Tyre pressure and when to replace a tyre

A tuk-tuk has three tyres doing the work most vehicles share across four. Looking after them is one of the easiest ways to save money and stay safe.

The short answer

Check pressures at least once a week with a gauge, using the figures in your owner's manual. Replace any tyre with a bulge, a deep cut or worn tread, and fix uneven wear early.

Why pressure matters

A soft tyre flexes more, heats up, wears on its edges and makes the engine work harder, so you use more fuel. An over-inflated tyre grips less and wears in the centre. Both make the vehicle less stable when loaded.

The correct pressure for your model is in the owner's manual. Check with the tyres cold, before the day's work.

Signs a tyre needs replacing

✓A bulge or blister on the sidewall
✓Cuts deep enough to see the cords underneath
✓Tread worn smooth, or close to the wear markers
✓Cracking in the rubber from age or sun
✓Repeated punctures in the same tyre

What uneven wear means

Both edges worn

Running under-inflated.

Centre worn

Running over-inflated.

One edge worn

Alignment or suspension needs checking.

Patchy or cupped

Wheel balance or worn shock absorbers.

Getting tyres replaced

Replace a damaged tyre before your next shift. Your branch can fit the right size for your model and check alignment at the same time.

Questions owners ask us

Should I carry more pressure when loaded?

Check your owner's manual. Some models list a different pressure for full loads.

Can a punctured tyre be repaired?

A small hole in the tread often can. Damage to the sidewall cannot be safely repaired.
